（以下の記事は2008年8月にイギリスの大英図書館を訪れた後に書いたものです。ナカニシヤ出版の「日本マックス・ウェーバー論争」に収録された筆者の論文「羽入式疑似文献学の解剖」に対する補遺です。）
1．ジュネーブ聖書調査補遺－－－大英図書館での調査結果
イギリス出張の最終日に、飛行機の時間の前のわずかな時間、ロンドン市内に行って大英図書館(The British Library)を訪ねました。
ここは日本で言えば国会図書館にあたり、イギリスで出版されるすべての書物が集められているのと同時に、元々大英博物館でのコレクションも書籍に関してはここに集約されているそうです。
いわば、イギリスで一番の、また世界でも有数の規模の図書館です。
ここに、英訳聖書がどのくらい集められているかを調査すれば、ヴェーバーの当時に16世紀の英訳聖書を見ることがどの程度困難だったかあるいは簡単だったかを再検証できます。（同様の調査は既にハイデルベルク大学の図書館で一度行っています。）
訪問時間はわずか1時間ほどで、歴史的貴重文献の展示室と、中をざっと回り、さらには置いてあった検索端末で蔵書の検索を試みたぐらいです。（閲覧室には登録しないと入れないので入っていません。）
展示室の”Sacred text”のコーナーにあった英訳聖書は16世紀以前のものではウィクリフ版だけでした。
所蔵図書の検索（これは後ほど日本からインターネットでもできることが判明しましたが）の結果は、ある意味大きく予想を裏切るものでした。時間もなかったので次の二つの検索だけ主に行いました。

C.Barkerはエリザベス女王御用達の宮廷出版社ですが、そのヒット数は何とわずか8件でした。そのうち1種だけが1586年のジュネーブ聖書ベースの聖書でした。

これはヒット数こそ358件ですが、ファクシミリ版を除く本物のジュネーブ聖書は、1560年、1562年、1607年のわずか3種でした。

General note The first edition of the so-called Genevan Version, commonly known as the “Breeches Bible” from its translation of Genesis iii. 7. The translation of the New Testament is a thorough revision of Whittingham’s Geneva New Testament of 1557. Double columns, 63 lines to a column. Preliminary quire of 4 leaves signed ***, containing a dedication to Queen Elizabeth and an address “To our Beloued in the Lord the brethren of England, Scotland, Ireland,” etc. The chapters are divided into verses, and an argument is prefixed to every book. The new annotations are printed in the margin.

General note Second edition of the Genevan Version. The general titlepage bears the date 1562; that of the New Testament 1561. The preliminary matter occupies the first seven pages of quire a. Double columns, 65 lines to a column. Some copies exhibit a variation at the foot of sig. a ii, having “natural” for “naturall” and a catchword “feare” where this has none. Imperfect; wanting ff. 60 and 140 of pt. 1. The titlepage is slightly mutilated.

つまり、この検索を見る限り、本家本元の大英図書館でさえ、本物のジュネーブ聖書は4種しか所蔵していない、ということになります。ついでに言えば、1557年版のジュネーブ新約聖書も検索してみましたが、色々検索語を変えても結局1件もヒットしませんでした。
ジーン・スコット博士の収集が推定ですがジュネーブ聖書だけで100種以上あったのとと比べると、雲泥の差です。（余談ですが、このジーン･スコット博士の聖書コレクションを紹介したHPは現在閉鎖されてしまい、もうアクセスできなくなっています。現地に行けばまだコレクションを見せてもらえるのかも、現時点では不明です。）本家本元の大英図書館でもこの程度なのかという驚きを禁じ得ません。羽入の言う「図書館に行けばどこにでもあった英訳聖書」が大嘘であったことは、またもはっきりと証明されてしまいました。
ヴェーバーが「エリザベス朝のイギリス国教会の宮廷聖書」と呼んでいる聖書を、私はChristopher Barkerの出版によるジュネーブ聖書ベース（改訂版を含む）の聖書（複数）であろうと推定しました。もしこの推定が正しいとすれば、ヴェーバーは当時の劣悪な研究環境で、今日の大英図書館すら1種しか所持していないような、稀少な英訳聖書まで何らかの形で手に入れて参照していることになります。（ちなみに羽入の新著によれば、欽定訳聖書の専門家であられる寺澤芳雄先生も、私と同じ推定をしているということです。）
ヴェーバーの真実の姿は、羽入が主張する「嘘つき、詐欺師、犯罪者」と言ったものとはまったく反対のものです。よくもたかだか注釈のためにここまで調べたものだと、正直感服します。
2．Lawrence Tomsonについて
ジュネーブ聖書の改訂者である、Lawrence Tomsonについて、私は、橋本HPに投稿した最後の論考で、エリザベス一世の国務大臣ウォルシンガムの秘書として、ウォルシンガムが指示したスパイ活動に従事していたのではないかという推理を行いました。今回のイギリス出張で、ヒースロー空港の書店で入手したRobert Hutchinsonの”Elizabeth’s SPY Master”という書籍によれば、Tomsonは間違いなくウォルシンガムの53人のスパイの一人としてカウントされています。実際に、1580年にローマ法王側からの内通者から、情報を売りたいという連絡がウォルシンガムにあった時、その内通者に接触して情報を入手するために、ウォルシンガムが北イタリアのボローニャに派遣したのがこのTomsonだったそうです。その情報とは、法王であったグレゴリウス13世がJacomo Bonacampaniniの軍をイングランドに派遣して、エリザベス女王の退位を策謀しているというものでした。
